Isopods

Isopods

(Isopoda)

Isopods are easy to care for and very low maintenance, they can be a great addition to a bioactive enclosure as part of a clean up crew or can make a great addition to any reptile or invert collection.

Suitability Suitable for beginners

Temperature variable, 15-22C usually

Humidity 40-60%

Max size variable depending on species, up to 2.5cm

Diet detritivores, which means that they consume dead and decomposing plant and animal material. they will also eat dried shrimp, selected veg an calcium powder.

Housing the substrate should be at least a couple of inches deep, and a few inches away from the top of the enclosure. A thin layer of Leaf Litter is then applied on top of the substrate, with care taken to ensure it doesn't reach too far up the sides to allow for Isopods to escape. make sure that one side of the enclosure remains damp while the other side is dry. cork bark is a great hide in the enclosure providing them with shelter, isopods will almost always hide on the underside of cork bark.

Sexing when examining the underside, look to the pleopods, the small plates beneath the tail end. males have long extensions to the endopods of these segments; they give the appearance of very acute angles. females have no extensions there and the pleopods look less sharply angular.

Life span up to 2-3 years approx.
